Introduction

Blockchain Enabled System for Sustainable Economy

BESSE (Blockchain Enabled System for Sustainable Economy) is a comprehensive blockchain-based platform designed to revolutionize the recycling and waste management industry. By embedding blockchain technology into the advanced recycling value chain, BESSE provides a fully traceable and accurately labeled record of recycled materials, from waste sourcing up to use in new production streams.

Overview

BESSE enables all stakeholders in the recycling industry to have complete visibility of the provenance and quality of materials entering and exiting their facilities. The platform combines smart contract-based auctions, asset tracking, environmental impact analysis, and role-based access control to create a transparent, efficient, and sustainable circular economy ecosystem.

Key Features

🏛️ Smart Contract Auctions

BESSE supports three types of blockchain-based auction mechanisms:

  • English Auctions: Traditional ascending price auctions where bidders compete by placing increasingly higher bids
  • Dutch Auctions: Descending price auctions where the price decreases over time until a bidder accepts
  • Fixed Price Sales: Direct sales at a predetermined price for immediate transactions

All auctions are executed on-chain using Solidity smart contracts, ensuring transparency, immutability, and trustless transactions. Settlement is protected by an on-chain escrow: the winning payment is held by the auction contract and released to the seller when the buyer confirms delivery — with a 7-day fallback so funds can never be locked indefinitely.

📦 Asset Management & Tracking

  • NFT-Based Assets: Each material batch is represented as an ERC-721 NFT, providing unique ownership and provenance tracking
  • QR Code Tracking: Physical assets are tracked through QR codes that can be scanned at various stages of the supply chain
  • Supply Chain Visibility: Complete tracking from creation through processing, transportation, and final delivery
  • Role-Based Tracking Events: Different stakeholders can record specific events (picked up, in transit, processed, delivered, etc.) based on their role

🌱 WARM Integration

BESSE integrates with the US EPA's Waste Reduction Model (WARM) version 16 to calculate:

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: MTCO2E (Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent) reductions
  • Energy Requirements: Energy savings from recycling vs. landfilling
  • Economic Impact: Labor hours, wages, and tax generation from recycling activities

This integration allows users to see the environmental and economic benefits of their recycling activities in real-time.

👥 Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)

BESSE implements a sophisticated role-based system with eight distinct stakeholder roles:

  • Municipality: Local government entities managing waste collection
  • Hauler: Waste collection and transportation companies
  • MRF: Material Recycling Facilities that process materials
  • Transportation Company: Logistics providers for material shipping
  • Broker: Intermediaries facilitating transactions
  • Remanufacturer/Mill: Facilities processing materials into new products
  • Landfill: Waste disposal site operators
  • Admin: System administrators with full platform access

Each role has specific permissions for creating auctions, bidding, asset creation, and tracking events.

🔐 Flexible Authentication

  • Social Sign-In (Privy): Google or email login with an embedded wallet created automatically — no crypto knowledge required
  • Wallet Sign-In (MetaMask): One-click login using wallet signature verification for crypto-native users
  • One Identity: Both paths converge on the same wallet-address identity via Firebase custom tokens
  • No Passwords Required: Cryptographic wallet ownership (or a verified social identity) replaces traditional passwords

📊 Dashboard & Analytics

  • Real-time auction monitoring
  • Personal transaction history
  • Asset portfolio management
  • Environmental impact metrics (WARM calculations)
  • Economic impact visualization

📱 Mobile App (iOS & Android)

  • Cross-platform React Native app sharing the platform's backend — see Mobile App
  • Browse and bid on auctions, create listings, and monitor impact from a phone
  • Live shipment tracking with maps and proof-of-delivery photo capture
  • Landfill directory and disposal quote requests for non-recyclable material
  • Built for field conditions: offline-tolerant, with resumable long-running operations

  • HyperFormula: Formula execution engine for WARM calculations

How It Works

  1. Registration: Users sign in with Google/email (an embedded wallet is created automatically) or connect MetaMask, and register with a role appropriate to their organization
  2. Asset Creation: Stakeholders create digital assets (NFTs) representing physical material batches
  3. Auction Creation: Authorized roles (Municipality, MRF, Broker) create auctions for their assets
  4. Bidding: Eligible bidders participate in auctions based on material type and role permissions
  5. Transaction Execution: Smart contracts automatically handle bid acceptance, NFT transfer, and escrowed payment — released to the seller on delivery confirmation
  6. Tracking: QR codes enable physical tracking throughout the supply chain
  7. Impact Analysis: WARM integration calculates environmental and economic benefits
  8. Delivery Confirmation: Multi-party verification ensures material delivery and quality

Use Cases

  • Municipal Waste Management: Cities can auction collected recyclables to processing facilities
  • MRF Operations: Material recycling facilities can sell processed bales to remanufacturers
  • Broker Services: Intermediaries can facilitate transactions between various stakeholders
  • Supply Chain Transparency: Complete traceability from waste source to final product
  • Environmental Reporting: Automated calculation of GHG reductions and energy savings
  • Circular Economy: Enabling efficient material flow in closed-loop systems
